MARLBOROUGH, MA — One of Marlborough’s most unique outdoor attractions is officially open for the season.

The Lake Williams floating boardwalk and trail system has reopened, the town's recreation department announced on Friday. The 1.5-mile loop winds through wooded terrain, marshland pathways, and elevated overlooks before connecting to the now-famous floating boardwalk stretching across the lake.

The Marlborough Recreation Department describes it as a "walk on water" experience.

Completed in May 2024, the floating boardwalk spans approximately 3,000 feet, which is more than half a mile, across Lake Williams.

It was built using more than 500 dock sections with custom aluminum railings. The structure gently moves beneath visitors as they walk, creating a unique “bouncing” sensation while offering panoramic views of the surrounding water and wetlands.

The trail system encompasses 113 acres of land and water and has quickly become one of Marlborough’s signature outdoor destinations.

In addition to walking and jogging, the area supports hiking, bird watching, and cross-country skiing during winter months.

Lake Williams also carries significant historical importance for Marlborough. In 1662, the Williams Tavern was constructed near the lake’s eastern shore and stood for more than 270 years. Historical records indicate George Washington visited and dined at the tavern twice, once in 1775 and again during his presidency in 1789.

Because the lake functions as a backup water supply for the city, several rules remain strictly enforced along the trail and boardwalk. Fishing, pets, swimming, boating, paddleboarding, bicycles and scooters are prohibited.

Visitors can access the trail from two locations: behind the Marlborough District Court at 45 Williams Street and from Lizotte Drive behind the baseball field.

Parking is available behind the Marlborough District Court after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and throughout weekends. Additional parking is also available near the trailhead kiosk off Lizotte Drive.
