MARLBOROUGH, MA — Assabet Valley students are spending this week getting a closer look at highway construction through a state-funded training program.

A total of 18 Assabet juniors from six trade programs are participating in the Massachusetts Pre-Apprenticeship and Vocational School Training Program this week at the Marlborough school. The program is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and aims to expose students to careers in highway construction through hands-on training and industry instruction.

Students are learning about personal protective equipment, concrete work, stripping forms, old-fashioned demolition and CPR/AED and first aid as part of the program, according to the school.

They are also scheduled to visit the New England Laborers Training Academy in Hopkinton. The New England Laborers' Training Trust says it operates training academies in Hopkinton and Pomfret, Connecticut, and offers construction-related instruction for laborers.

MassDOT's 2026-2030 Capital Investment Plan states that its Pre-Apprenticeship Program is a collaborative effort designed to expand access to training and employment opportunities in the construction trades and the transportation sector.

Denise Carrier, Assabet's director of college, career and co-op placements, organized the opportunity. Sudbury Public Works Director Tina Rivard and Hopkinton DPW Director Kerry Reed also served as guest speakers during the program.
