MARLBOROUGH, MA — Police recruits in Marlborough recently joined a statewide show of support for a Wareham girl whose dream is to become a police officer.

The Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee's Marlborough 2nd Recruit Officer Course collected police patches, trading cards, stuffed animals and challenge coins from recruits' hiring departments for Mia Johnson, an 8-year-old Wareham girl with acute myeloid leukemia, according to the MPTC.

Mia's Patch Project began after Mia, who has wanted to become a police officer since she was 4, started receiving police patches from departments in Massachusetts and beyond, Fun 107 reported. Mia was diagnosed June 10 and has been undergoing chemotherapy.

The Marlborough recruits also signed a card for Mia, along with the academy director and staff instructors, telling her that the academy is standing with her during treatment, according to the MPTC.

Police departments across the region have also taken part in support efforts for Mia. Wareham police previously asked departments to record messages of encouragement, drawing responses from agencies in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Georgia, Boston 25 News reported.
