This follows two mosquito samples collected in Marlborough that tested positive for West Nile virus this season, prompting the treatment. No human cases have been reported.

Marlborough's West Nile virus risk level remains moderate, according to the notice.

Spraying is planned along the following streets and areas:

Residents in the treatment area should close street-facing windows and, if possible, keep pets inside between sunset and midnight, according to the Board of Health. People should remain indoors during spraying and for 15 to 20 minutes afterward.

Residents should also turn off outside-air controls on older window air conditioners. Wash vegetables from home gardens before eating. Pools do not need to be covered.

Property owners may request that spraying be excluded in front of their homes through the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project's pesticide exclusion page. Submit requests as soon as possible.

West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes. Health officials recommend avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent and removing standing water from around homes.
