MARLBOROUGH, MA — A stretch of South Street is slated for major infrastructure upgrades to clear the way for new housing and redevelopment.

The Marlborough Economic Development Corporation will receive $4 million through the state's HousingWorks Infrastructure Program for roadway and water system improvements along South Street, Gov. Maura Healey announced on Thursday.

The work will include a traffic signal upgrade and new turn lanes at West Main Street, realignment of the Beach Street intersection, new crosswalks, pedestrian improvements and full-depth roadway reconstruction.

The improvements are expected to help unlock the redevelopment of about 80 acres, including a proposed 720-unit residential project, according to the state's project description.

$330 Million Awarded To More Than 200 MA Communities

The Marlborough award is part of nearly $109.7 million distributed to 54 projects through the HousingWorks Infrastructure Program.

State officials announced a total of $330 million for 403 economic development and housing projects in 207 communities through the fiscal 2027 Community One Stop for Growth program.

The projects are expected to support more than 27,000 new homes, more than 13,000 permanent jobs and more than 7 million square feet of commercial development statewide, according to the Healey administration. The state estimates the projects will unlock $24.6 billion in private investment.

"These awards will turn underused properties into new homes and businesses, strengthen downtowns, create good jobs and unlock billions of dollars in private investment," Gov. Healey said in the announcement. "That means more opportunity for families, workers and businesses in every part of our state."
