Officers responded to the parking lot around 4:53 p.m. after receiving a report that an apparently intoxicated man was attempting to drive away, police said. Officers located Gonzalez Escarate and observed signs of impairment.

Police determined he should be taken into protective custody for his safety. When an officer attempted to place him in handcuffs, Gonzalez Escarate allegedly pulled away, pushed the officer to the ground and ran.

Another officer injured his arm while attempting to gain control of Gonzalez Escarate during the pursuit, police said. A sergeant deployed a Taser and officers took Gonzalez Escarate into custody after a struggle.

Gonzalez Escarate was also accused of threatening an officer while being transported to a hospital, according to police.

Southborough Fire Department personnel took the injured officer to a local hospital. He was treated and released Thursday evening.

Gonzalez Escarate was evaluated at a local hospital before being released and taken to the Southborough Police Department for booking. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Westborough District Court.
