Assabet Valley Staff Lines up for Fingerprinting
New state law requirements affect school personnel
In January of 2013, Governor Deval L. Patrick signed a law requiring that all public and private school employees be fingerprinted so that they can be checked against criminal databases nationally. Massachusetts is the last state to have relied only on the more local Criminal Offender Record Information System (CORI), but now fingerprints will be forwarded to the FBI for national background checks. New staff members must comply immediately, while veteran staff have until September, 2016, to complete the process.
Assabet Valley Regional Technical High contacted IDENTOGO® Centers by MorphoTrust, the company’s identity services business, with headquarters in Billerica, who has the contract for the “State Automated Fingerprint Identification System,” to have a mobile unit at the school during a professional day for staff. On Tuesday, October 14th, over 100 staff members at Assabet took advantage of the opportunity. “Even though the veteran staff weren’t required to have the fingerprinting done for another two years, we were very pleased to see that most of them were proactive and complied with the new law so quickly. Obviously the convenience of spending five minutes on a professional day right in our building instead of driving to a center somewhere else played heavily in their decision, so we’re grateful to MorphoTrust USA for making this possible. The day went smoothly, as folks were able to register in advance online, and then just stop by the conference room for a few minutes out of their busy day,” reported Mark Hollick, Principal at Assabet Valley.
