Damage Control

Must religion be another Debbie-downer? Why do we have to hear such negative news in church?

We are so used to politicians and CEOs coming out with ridiculous statements after they blunder. My two favoirtes are: "No comment" and "I can't confirm or deny." You know something serious happened when you hear "I can't confirm or deny." You know there is deep doo-doo when the press release says "No comment." Yet somehow people still think that these ridiculous statements are better than the plain truth "said openly."

I am looking at the lectionary text for Sunday again. Its Mark 8 verses 31-38.

Mark is a man of few words but he gives quite a lot of deatil in this one. "Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected (...) and killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly."

There's a religious leader you want to follow!

Why couldn't Jesus say "No comment" or "I can't confirm or deny my death"? Can we blame Peter for trying to do damage control? Should the church do it? We have so many downers already, must religion be another one? Why can't churches be about fun, good, enterataining stuff—you know, the ones that makes you feel good?
