Wisdom? Why bother?

Wisdom? What is it? Who needs it? And if we do - why do so few people seem to have it recently?

It just dawned on my recently that one of the compliments that I read about or heard when I was a child has completely disappeared. How many times have you heard recently someone describe another person as "wise"? We have have experts, we have analysts, we have think tanks - and yet our culture has completely failed in producing "wise" people.

In the Hebrew Scriptures (or Old Testament) the are many genres of literature. On of them is "wisdom literature." Not exactly the same thing as Greek philosophy, it tried to answer the question what is a good or godly or peaceful life. What does it mean to posses wisdom - notice that the authors of those books thought that having wisdom is not an state in itself - it is an action, a way of life.

What is wisdom to you? Who is a "wise person" for you - and why?
