Chinese Women's Hockey Team Works in Marlborough Toward Olympics

A group of 23 Chinese women hockey players recently spent six weeks in Marlborough. It was one step in their journey to the Olympics

“Team China” hopes to someday head to the Winter Olympics, and they had been practicing at New England Sports Center in Marlborough, coached by Rick Seeley, formerly the Quinnipiac University hockey coach, reports the Boston Globe.

Roughly 170 women in China, with population of 1.4 billion, play hockey. The group plans on returning to Marlborough next summer, and while they were here practiced every day and played exhibition games against junior women’s teams and Becker College.

Next up for the team are tournaments in Europe and Canada, the next step in the goal of competing in the Winter Olympics of 2018.

Marlborough officials added that the group’s stay was a boost for the economy in Marlborough, where the team also stayed at the Marriott Hotel.
