Progressive Spatter Technique (Experimental Watercolor) with Nan Rumpf


This is an experimental watercolor technique employing separate layers of spatter to build up a
composition. Contact paper design transfer and different methods of spattering paint will be explored.

Materials List

Please bring the following materials to class:
•  watercolor paper (140 LB cold press)
(You can buy it in blocks or in separate sheets and cut to desired size)
•  a supporting non porous backboard slightly larger than your paper
•  artist tape or masking tape
•   tubes of watercolor paint (artist grade preferred)
•   watercolor brushes  a synthetic round brush for mixing colors
•   a misting bottle
•   a roll of paper towels
•   water jar or other container for rinsing
•   4B or 6B pencil and a kneaded eraser
•  an  inexpensive sketchbook  (for planning paintings and testing colors)
•  white plate, tray or palette lid for mixing colors
•  containers for pooling separate wash colors
(plastic cups or bowls or a muffin ti )
•  utility knife
• tracing paper
•  a hair drier will also come in handy
•  Please bring your own photo reference photos or value sketch
• Con-Tact brand clear contact paper (I will bring some for those who can not find it)
