On February 21, at 1 pm the Arts Alliance Focus on the Arts program will present Behind the Mask Theatre’s performance of The Woman Who Outshone the Sun at the
Marlborough Senior Center, 250 Main Street. This performance is held during school vacation at the handicap accessible, convenient downtown location. Multi generations of families will enjoy sharing time together with four artists wearing life size masks and spectacular
costumes during this multicultural show performed as a bilingual story (Spanish& English), and based on a poem by Alejandro Cruz Martinez.
TheWoman Who Outshone the Sun tells the story of a beautiful and mysterious woman with magical powers who is exiled from a mountain village. She takes away
the water source, a vital river. Through their suffering for what they have lost, the villagers learn important lessons of tolerance, forgiveness, and the frailty of the ecosystem.
At 2 pm, following the performance is a Mardi Gras Mask Making Workshop. Working buffet style, participants select an appropriate elastic strapped papier mache mask blank and then proceed to choose materials, such as cheneille
stems, pony beads, jewels, feathers, fur, or fabric, to apply at glueing
stations, before augmenting with painted patterns and textures. Finished masks
are padded to ensure a comfortable fit. Educators display samples, discuss
techniques, and facilitate each process.
