The Friends Announce Annual Juried Art Show, And Jurors

The 44th annual regional juried art show is coming up in November.

The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library present their 44th Annual Regional Juried Art Show from Monday, Nov. 9, through Sunday, Nov. 15, in the Friends Art Gallery, Bigelow Auditorium, Marlborough Public Library.

All area artists 18 years and older, professional and non-professional, are invited to submit drawings, paintings, prints and mixed media in 2D by the deadline of Friday, Nov. 6, at p.m.

Entry forms are available at the Friends Info Board in the library’s rear entrance or online.

Three prominent art authorities will select, from all submitted entries, works to be hung in the exhibition. They will choose from these works; First, Second and Third Place Honors plus Three Honorable Mention Awards.

In addition, there will be two special awards; The Sam and Mable Field Memorial Award for best depiction of nature and The Best of Marlborough Artist Award. The public will be invited to vote for their favorite work while visiting the Gallery.

Their votes will be collected in a special ballot box marked “Popular Vote” and will be counted at the end of the exhibition. There will be monetary awards presented to the recipients of all awards. The three Judges selected by Friends Art Chair Judy McCabe are Susan Swinand, Emily Mazzola and Edward Turner.

Meet the jurors:

Sue Swinand is primarily a painter with a preference for water media. Although her work is usually abstract, the structures and forms of nature are a big influence for her. She graduated, magna cum laude, from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia with a BFA in Painting. She was awarded a Sartain Fellowship, which allowed her to travel and study in Europe following graduation. When she returned, she attended the Barnes Foundation for two years, where she studied the Philosophy and Appreciation of Art. She taught studio classes at the Worcester Art Museum for more than 25 years and visual communications, design and painting at Clark University. She currently teaches painting at Wellesley College Greenhouses. She has exhibited widely on the east coast including one person shows at Woodmere Art Museum, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Vorpal Galleries NYC, Arden Gallery in Boston, the Berman Museum at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.

Edward Turner graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1990 in illustration. Since his graduation, he has freelanced for companies such as USDF magazine, Warner Brothers, The Community Advocate, Walt Disney Studios, Green Friendly Golf, Holt and Mifflon Publishers, Boston Billiards, Central One Federal Credit Union, Paul Mitchell Products and his works have been featured in “100 of the World’s Best Bars”, a coffee table book. His work is on permanent display at the Westborough Public Library. He is also the political cartoonist for the Community Advocate - Bagdon Advertising. He is an expert in acrylics, oils, watercolor, and specializes in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. After freelancing for 25 years he purchased the Art and Frame Emporium in Westborough, MA where he is the area’s lead designer in custom picture framing.

Emily Mazzola graduated from University of Connecticut with a MA and Skidmore College with a BA. She is an art historian and curator specializing in American Art (19th century to present), and Women’s and Gender Studies. She is currently the first-ever Koch Curatorial Fellow at the Fitchburg Art Museum and a Research Fellow at the University of Connecticut. Prior to joining the staff at FAM, Emily was a guest curator at the William Benton Museum of Art and the Assistant Curator at the University of Connecticut’s Contemporary Art Galleries. She has also worked extensively with Boston-based private arts collections.

Also on Monday evening Nov. 9th from 6-8 p.m. The Friends “First Lady’s Reception for the Arts” will be hosted by Mrs. Arthur G. Vigeant for her fourth year. The monetary Awards Presentations will take place at 7 PM. Refreshments by Employment Options will be served and music provided by Linda Dushane, harpist.
