Get Your Pants Scared Off for a Can of Peas at Marlborough Haunted House

The Asylum event and haunted house is back this year in Marlborough.

It was created out of her basement, and out of an obsession with Halloween. That obsession led to a whole lot of scary-good fun for Marlborough and surrounding communities.

This is the third year that Leah Amato is opening “The Asylum” as a multi-night event, and the fifteenth Halloween that her home has been open to fright-seekers.

“Each year, I design a completely new haunt; the theme changes, the props are newly made or re-purposed, the script is original, and the actors get different roles and costumes,” said Amato. “I do this 100 percent out of pocket and passion. The actors are volunteers - friends and neighbors. I build as many of the props as I can and supplement with store purchases where needed.”

The admission fee to The Asylum is a non-perishable food pantry donation.

“That’s it,” said Amato. “Bring me a can of peas and we will scare your pants off.”

Each year, the event has grown and become more successful. Last year, 300 “victims” came through the doors, and 500 pounds of food were donated.

“I live and breathe this event,” said Amato. “The theme, layout, and more than half the props are already complete. I’ve begun enlisting volunteers for set-up and as actors. I love bringing this to the community.”

The Asylum is located at 111 Brimsmead St. in Marlborough. Hourse are 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, Sunday, Oct. 25, Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31. There is also a special “less-scary time” on Oct. 25 from 5-6 p.m. This time has lights on and no actors.
