The Advanced Math and Science Academy’s high school math team has started the year with a variety of accomplishments through competitions at universities in the Northeast.
It placed tenth at the Princeton University competition and fourth at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. At the prestigious Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT), the team claimed seventh place in one of the rounds, which is AMSA’s first top ten placement at HMMT in the six years since its inception.
The team also has done exceedingly well in competitions at other high schools. The freshman team continued its tradition of winning every year at both the first and second WoCoMaL (Worcester County Math League) league meet at Douglas High School.

The team has 72 active members. Forty-seven of those members are part of the varsity team, which is coached by Mr. Vea and Mr. Pettinelli, and the rest are members of the freshman team.
Mr. Vea said that “for some, they just really like math, so it’s an opportunity to do math and be competitive. For some, they want to improve their math.” Competing also helps improve standardized test skills, “because you’re given more unexpected problems that you aren’t used to working on,” explained Mr. Vea.

The meets are leading up to the state competition in April. The team is hoping to qualify not only for states, but also qualify for the New England competition by being one of the top four or five teams in the state.
