How Many Turned Out to Vote in Marlborough's Election?

Last week, former Boston City Council President Lawrence S. DiCara, Northeastern University instructor James Sutherland, and Samuel True Adams, service specialist at Minuteman Health, delved into Boston’s voter turnout dating back to the election of 1985 in a recent article for Commonwealth Magazine.

The article detailed a number breakdown that representing a growing voter apathy in Massachusetts, particularly in municipal elections. The three surmised that this year would be no different.

According to the history of Marlborough, the city, too, had followed the trend of declining voter turnout. From 2007 to 2013, the percentage of voters has dipped around 13 percent, dropping the most between 2011 and 2013. But Marlborough’s voters turned out again on Tuesday, bringing the percentage slightly above 20 percent.

Here’s a breakdown of Marlborough’s turnout in municipal elections dating back to 2007:

  • 2007: 6,298 of 18,669 registered voters, marking 33.74 percent
  • 2009: 6,123 of the 20,239 registered voters cast ballots, marking 30.25 percent
  • 2011: 6,002 of 20,417 registered voters, marking 29.40 percent of the voters
  • 2013: 3,274 of the 21,364 registered voters, marking 15.32 percent of the voters
  • 2015: 4,388 of 20,809 registered voters, marking 21.09 percent of voters.

To compare, in Beverley’s election, 6,668 of 26,039 registered voters voted for 25.61 percent.
