Teona Brown To Join Marlborough City Council: 2021 Election Results

Marlborough's Ward 4 Council race went to a newcomer, while Mayor Arthur Vigeant is back for another term.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Preliminary vote totals in the 2021 Marlborough election are in, and the results show that at least some voters were ready for change this year.

Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant defeated Marlborough police officer David Garceau for the second election in a row, according to preliminary results.

But in the Ward 4 Council race, first-time challenger Teona Brown was leading incumbent Robert Tunnera, according to unofficial results released Tuesday. Brown was ahead by 43 votes. Read more about Brown and why she ran here.

"Since childhood, I have wanted to serve my community in this capacity, and given the time I have available, I am at a point where I am able to take on this big responsibility and be a responsive representative," Brown said in a candidate profile in October.

Tunnera first won the Ward 4 seat in 2010, and has never faced a challenger. No other Marlborough City Councilors were facing challengers in 2021.

The top vote-getter in Tuesday's election was incumbent At-Large Councilor Samantha Perlman.

In the Marlborough School Committee race, every incumbent won back their seat. The lone challenger, Maureen Brennan, placed last in the four-way race.

Turnout in the 2021 election was lower than the last municipal election in 2019. About 19 percent of registered voters went to the polls on Nov. 2 compared to 25.02 percent in 2019.
