MARLBOROUGH, MA — It could be the Marlborough police officer who took the time to rescue a trapped hawk. Or it could be the neighbor who rescued a Vietnam veteran during a fire last spring.

The Marlborough mayor's office is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Humanitarian Award. The award is given to a local resident who has done something extraordinary and compassionate, and is handed out at the biennial Mayor's Charity Ball.

"This opportunity allows us to recognize an outstanding resident who puts the needs of others before their own. Marlborough is full of people who selflessly give their money, time, and energy, in many charitable ways, and that is one of the things that makes Marlborough so great," Mayor Arthur Vigeant said in a statement.

The mayor's ball is coming up in March. The event was started in 1960 by former mayor Kusson Haddad and raises money for a community fund used to help people who need emergency assistance.

If you know a local humanitarian who deserves this award, you can nominate them by emailing mayorscharityball@marlborough-ma.gov, or by mailing the information to City Hall. You can also contact event co-chairs Meredith Harris at 508-801-2134 or Bob Kayes at 508-981-2960.
