Marlborough Medal Of Liberty Ceremony Honors World War II Vets

Medals of Liberty are awarded to the families of Massachusetts residents killed at war.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — A Medal of Liberty ceremony in Marlborough this month will dozens of World War II veterans with a connection to the city who died at war.

The June 14 ceremony hosted by the Marlborough Historical Society will grant Medals of Liberty to the families of 38 men who died fighting in World War II, and who have a connection to Marlborough.

State law allows the families of veterans who died in combat or in an act of terrorism to request Medals of Honor. In 2021, resident Lydia Whitcomb received two Medals of Liberty in honor of her husband, Francis Thomas, and her brother, Francis Brazeau.

The historical society expects about 200 people to attend the ceremony. It begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Whitcomb Middle School, 25 Union St.
