MARLBOROUGH, MA — With just under two weeks before the candidate filing deadline, most 2021 races in Marlborough remain uncompetitive.

There are 10 races in the 2021 election, and so far only three challengers have pulled papers to face off against incumbents, according to the City Clerk. That also means there may not be any primary contests in September.

As of Thursday, incumbent Mayor Arthur Vigeant was facing a challenge from David Garceau, a local police officer who ran against Vigeant in 2019 — however, Garceau had not yet returned paperwork to get on the ballot. Only the City Council Ward 4 race is competitive, with incumbent Robert Tunnera facing a challenge from first-time candidate Teona Brown.

On the school side, the three incumbents whose terms are up in 2021 — Michelle Bodin-Hettinger, Earl Geary and Denise Ryan — all appear to be seeking reelection. Challenger Maureen Brennan pulled papers to run in the race on July 23, but had not returned them as of Thursday, according to the City Clerk. Geary also had not returned papers as of Thursday.

Candidates have until the end of the day on Aug. 17 to return papers to get on the ballot. Here's a look at who may be running in each race:
