Participating In A Summer Sporting Event? Plan Your Training!

Summer is a time when many people participate in sports, either for competition of personal enjoyment. If you're looking to gain a competitive edge or simply achieve your personal best, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

Summer is almost here and with it comes the opportunity to participate in sporting events. Bicycle races, runs, walks, a favorite summer sport, all of these things are something that you might be participating in this coming summer. If you’re looking to help increase you performance its a good idea to plan ahead for your specific event. There are some key considerations to take into account when planning ahead for your summer activity.

First, ask yourself how much time you realistically have to prepare. This boils down to the date of the event and what you genuinely hope to achieve there. Ideally you want more time to prepare yourself. Even if you’re on a short time budget, knowing how much time you have to work with can give you a decent frame work to operate in. Hazy estimates on available training time can ultimately set you up for frustration and inconsistent training sessions. In addition to looking at training time, try to divide your training time into four week blocks. The four week blocks will help you target your training sessions accordingly.

Second, dedicate each four week block to a specific training goal. A training goal could be strength, muscle size, or endurance. Ideally you want a combination of all three. A four week training period allows your muscles to sufficiently adapt to meet each goal. Talking to a fitness professional can certainly help you in this regard. If you know how much time you have to train and have already divided it into four week periods, the person you talk to can help you organize an exercise regimen that suits your needs.

Third, take the first four weeks of your new training schedule as an introduction to your personalized program. There is nothing more frustrating than launching yourself into a new program with enthusiasm and underestimating the toll it takes on the body. Exercise is a stress and in some cases you may feel mentally and physically fatigued. Each workout will be its own challenge and work through each challenge as its own separate entity. Focusing on the long term constantly can result in discouragement.

These are three of the basic ways in which you can prepare for your event. Having said this, not all sporting events are of a competitive nature. These guidelines however can help you reach your personal best in any event that you choose to participate in this coming summer. Plan, train, and enjoy the benefits of your hard work and effort.
