Pentagon Accidentally Sends Anthrax to Marlborough Lab

A small amount of anthrax was accidentally shipped by the Department of Defense to labs around the country, including Marlborough.

A shipment of active anthrax was accidentally shipped to a laboratory in Marlborough from the Department of Defense, reported NECN.

Health officials confirmed that small amounts of the spores were mistakenly delivered by the U.S. Army to IQuum lab, which is owned by Roche Molecular in Marlborough.

The Department of Public Health is investigating, and said there is no threat to public safety. NECN said they are working to get the spores back to the federal government.

The Marlborough shipment was one of many around the country.

On Friday, the Pentagon said that these mistaken shipments of the anthrax were sent to 24 laboratories in 11 states and two foreign countries, making it more widespread than originally thought, reported the Associated Press.
