Webster Runs with Hope in Heart
Marlborough resident Maura Webster will run the Falmouth Road Race to raise funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

When Maura Webster's father Joe was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2009, it hit close to home. When her mother, Maria, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, it spurred her to action.
"The week after she was diagnosed, Dana Farber posted on Facebook they were starting to recruit runners for the Falmouth Road Race," said Webster. "And I thought, 'I'm just going to do it.'"
Already a runner--she found it provided a respite from the stress--Webster set an ambitious fundraising goal of $4,250. With the race on Aug. 12, she is already more than halfway past her goal.

"Knowing people are supporting me with donations is definitely a motivation," she said. "If I get a donation for Dana Farber, even if I'm exhausted, I'm going to make it out for that run."
A part-time jewelry maker, Webster has designed a knotted leather bracelet with a silver charm stamped with the breast cancer ribbon which she gives to those who make donations over $50.

"It's meant to be a fun, low-key event," she said.
Webster's father is now cancer-free, though he lost an ear to skin cancer. Her mother, meanwhile, continues to undergo treatment at Dana Farber, where she is known for donning a bright pink wig to show her support for her fellow patients. "She is our rock," Webster said.
Webster has run half marathons in the past, but knows the high profile Falmouth course poses its own challenges. "I had no idea how hilly Falmouth is--I'm a little daunted," she said.
All told, more than 100 runners will be tackling Falmouth on behalf of Dana Farber. Supporters can make donations directly to Webster's Dana Farber Falmouth Road Race page.
