Self Defense Class for Marlboro Dog Walkers
In response to recent attacks on young women, Happy Couple's Pet Care organized a women's self defense class for employees.
In reponse to recent attacks on young women, owner of Happy Couple's Pet Care in Marlboro, James Calihan, decided to do something about it. He said, "This is something we take very seriously. I have no choice but to take proactive measures to protect the company's most valuable asset" (meaning his staff). James said that although organizing a weekend class with 5 people took time and effort, the feedback from the participants was fantastic. Each one of the staff members remarked that they felt more comfortable dealing with a potential threat after taking the class. He hopes that other business owners will take advantage of similar available training.

Last Saturday, August 20th, the Happy Couple's staff spent 3 hours practicing awareness and self defense techniques under the capable guidance of Kwon's Martial Arts Center. Pictured below, you can see Master Nguyen demonstration effective striking while the students observe. The staff at Kwon's covered many topics, from basic self defense, to some custom-tailored scenarios based on requests from the students.

The participants in the class practiced kicking and hand strikes. The focus was on self-preservation, so many of the scenarios discussed involved alerting authorities and methods to draw attention to would-be attackers. Although the subject of being attacked can be sensitive, Kwon's handled the discussions with care. They often referenced their own loved ones during examples. It's clear that self defense is a passion of theirs and they plan on creating a regular "drop in" class in the near future.
