Staff Sergeant Dies, Donates Organs to Two Veterans: Friends and Family Raise Funds for His Family

MARLBOROUGH, MA -- Both Staff Sergeant Matthew James Whalen and his wife, Hannah, served as STRIKE solders in the U.S. Army.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, Matt Whalen fell ill and was diagnosed with a hemorrhage in his brain. He died, and on Dec. 21, his organs were donated to two veterans in dire need of transplants.

The family, from Marlborough, is now left to fend without their husband, without their father. Hannah was left with hospital bills, and two small children of which to provide.

A GoFundMe fundraiser in his name has raised more than $70,000 so far.
