Sixth-grader Leon Zoettler (Marlborough) won AMSA’s Geography Bee on Jan. 15. The competition is part of qualifying for the National Geographic Geography Bee. Leon will take the State Qualifying Test soon in the hope of representing the school in the state finals.
Sixth-grader Aditya Kaushik (Hopkinton) and eighth-grader Abhiram Kolluri (Marlborough) finished second and third, respectively, in the 2014 National Geographic Bee.
History teacher Adam Jewell has organized the Geography Bee at AMSA three years running. Mr. Jewell feels that the Geography Bee “promotes global awareness” because it teaches students about parts of the world that they might otherwise never know about.

“Starting and fostering any educational interest is important,” Mr. Jewell said.
There are additional competitions that students interested in geography can participate in throughout the year outside of AMSA. Mr. Jewell adds that, “We need more participation all around, from faculty and students.” AMSA is not waiting for the world to change. We are changing the world one student at a time…every day. www.amsacs.org
