Abhinav Kurada, Grade 10, was recognized for his “Fuel Economists Project” by Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary, Rick Sullivan. Abhinav’s project was judged and scored by Sullivan’s environmental educator advisory committee, beating out other Massachusetts teams to compete nationally.
Abhinav and his team, the “Fuel Economists,” pitched a design to improve a truck’s fuel economy as part of Siemens’ “We Can Change the World” Environmental Challenge. The “Fuel Economists” competed as finalists at the national level in this competition.
In order to improve the fuel economy of a truck, Abhinav and his team came up with a design to reduce drag. As a simple solution to the problem, the team designed new truck mirrors, an often overlooked contributor to drag in commercial trucks.

After performing several projective tests with the aid of the Siemens’ program, the team’s design was determined to be sixty percent better than the best commercial mirror at reducing drag. Their design would save more money annually for trucking companies on top of being more environmentally conscious.
As a reward for their ingenuity, Abhinav and his team received recognition in the form of a citation from the Massachusetts state senate and approval to compete in the national competition.
