Varsity Girls Basketball Falls to Westborough, 46-18

Kahn scores game-high 12 points

WESTBOROUGH – Marlborough junior Samatha Kahn scored 12 points, including all 10 points scored in third quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers dropped a 46-18 decision to Westborough.

“It was good to be able to turn to our bench tonight,” said Westborough head coach Scott Kittredge. He added that “we have pretty well-balanced group, and [our team's] talent doesn't stop at the bench.”

With the victory, the Rangers improve to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Midland Wachusett League, while Marlborough falls to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

The first three minutes of the game resulted in a 2-2 tie, but Westborough broke free of the Panthers with a 10-0 run. Senior Hannah Artner and junior Krystal Armand scored four points each as the Rangers took a 12-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Rangers held Marlborough to just one basket in the second quarter, while putting up 11 points, including a shot from three-point range by junior Jenna Kelley. At the end of the first half, Westborough maintained a 19-point lead, 23-4.

The Panthers' junior Samantha Kahn put up a quick seven points to open the third stanza, cutting Marlborough's deficit to 12 points, 23-11.

Samantha is a player “we rely on a lot, and ask a lot of her as a scoring point guard,” said Marlborough head coach Pat Kiley. He added that “she is an unselfish player, her approach to scoring always comes second to her team.”

Westborough retaliated after four scoreless minutes, outscoring the Panthers 10-3, and extending its lead to 21 points, 35-14.

In the fourth quarter, the Rangers secured their second league win by outscoring Marlborough, 11-4, and picking up a 46-18 victory.

The Panthers return to action this Monday, January 17, when they host Groton-Dunstable at 7 p.m.
