143 Pond View Farm Road, West Tisbury
A great 3 acre property located on a peninsula that juts into Tisbury Great Pond. Maybe the Wamponoags made their summer home there!
This beautiful pastoral property is located on a peninsula that on one side is Pear Tree Cove and on the other side is Town Cove. Both of these coves flow into Tisbury Great Pond which is known for fishing and boating. Right now there is a vintage three bedroom cottage tucked away near the end of the road. Also included in the listing price is a deeded Quansoo Beach Lot.
I've been to this property a couple of times, and it mesmerizing. There is a small sandy beach where you could keep a canoe or kayak. After speaking to the West Tisbury Building Inspector, there is enough land to build a house and guest house.
Wampanoag Indians which means"easteners", came to Martha's Vineyard centuries ago. At one time there were 3000 living on Martha's Vineyard. They grew maize, beans, and squash, but they were also hunters-gatherers who went fishing and ate fruits to round out their diets. They did not live in teepees or longhouses, but wetus which is the word for "house" in the Wampanoag tribe. The wetus were doomed shaped huts made of sticks and grass. The Wampanoag spoke a language sometimes called Massachusett or Natick.

After visiting this property, I had a vision of the Wamponoags making a summer camp on this picturesque peninsula. Many tribes would have a summer home near the water, because it was easier to catch fish .But then in the winter they would move inland. I imagined many wetus scattered around on this peninsula with children playing and swimming. Men would be getting into their canoes to fish, and Wamponoag women would be making meals by the fire. What an amazing place to spend the summer. On a hot day they could swim to keep cool, and at night there would be a cool breeze from the pond, making sleep easy.
This property can be your summer camp too, where you can even build a wetus, instead of a house. 143 Pond View Farm Road, West Tisbury
