A Stroll Along Main Street Vineyard Haven

Ginger starts a serial blog about the Duartes walking their Shar-peis around Vineyard Haven.

David and I walk our Shar-peis most every evening when the shadows start and the temps start to cool a little. We have several routes to take and David usually lets me decide because he figures we'll end up going that way anyway. Wives tend to be pushy ya know; well,we can't help it.

Our little girl, Emma, likes to walk in the surf between the ferry and the pier at Owen Park so yesterday we headed down State and across the cemetery to West Spring and on down to the turnaround in front of the Steamship Authority property where we hit the beach and walked over to the pier. It takes a while because Emma has to have her refreshing dip in the ocean which alternates with sniffing every clump of seaweed on the beach.

John Rambo, our little rescue man, is content to just walk along the beach and enjoy the scenery. He wakes up every morning just happy to be alive. David and I always have the coming "dreaded hill" to climb from the pier up to Main Street. At the top of the hill we have to rest on one of the several benches provided by Owen Park before making our way down Main Street and back home. As we were sitting yesterday, David looked up at the flagpole and said, "One Halloween when I was a kid, my friends and I hoisted a bicycle up that flagpole." I just rolled my eyes; another badboy David story.

I noticed yesterday that this season's new La Cave Restaurant (located on the former Bagel Authority premises) was bustling with business. All the patio tables were filled with happy diners. A lot of them were Vineyarders, which is a great sign for La Cave. The buzz started several weeks ago about how good the food is at the new eatery owned by Jean Dupon who also owns Le Grenier upstairs. We have yet to go to La Cave but you can bet it's going to be soon!  Another bright spot on Main St. is the new location of Bunch of Grapes book store in the former Bowl & Board site.

Stay tuned for future "Walking the Shar-peis" blogs. Our third Shar-pei, Blaze, is not included in our longer walks due to her age.
