Sharks Break Slide

Sharks beat the Seacost Mavericks in Rochester, face them again in Fourth of July weekend game on Sunday.

ROCHESTER – The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks beat the Seacoast Mavericks 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Futures Collegiate Baseball League action at Bert George Field behind the strong pitching of Jay Swinford, who pushed his record to 3 -1 and lowered his ERA to 3.27.

The Sharks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then took advantage of a one-out hit batsman and a walk, which was followed by Steve Schoettmer’s deep two-RBI double to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead.

The Mavs stranded seven runners, failing to take advantage of several opportunities to score, including Davidson Peguero’s deep double to the wall in centerfield to start the third inning. Swinford made sure that Peguero was unable to advance as he induced a failed sacrifice, a shallow fly to right field and a ground out to second to end the inning.
