Smile & Wave

I tend to see the same faces now and again during the run, and while it might only be a quick, "morning" or "hi", there is some level of acknowledgement between me and everyone I encounter.

So I had every intention of writing about one topic for my latest entry, then I was out and about and became acutely aware of something a bit more “relevant” to the time and place known as “summertime on Martha’s Vineyard.” Maybe those reading this blog can be a little more “aware” as you traverse and peruse the island’s populous areas and confirm my suspicions about the friendly versus the aloof individuals you encounter?

Being a rather fastidious creature of habit, I am easy to track when it comes to my workout routine. I have a loop around West Chop that I run on a regular basis. While the times and distances might vary slightly according to seasons and schedule, during the summer it usually begins just before sunrise. Given that routine, I tend to see the same faces now and again during the run and while it might only be a quick, “morning” or “hi”, there is some level of acknowledgement between me and everyone I encounter. Everyone that is, save for a select few that choose to ignore that simple polite act.

Perhaps their iPod was too distracting or their pace was too quick? No, that was definitely NOT the case. I might not be a world-class runner, but I’m no slouch, either. My pace does not preclude me from the aforementioned verbal greeting or a friendly wave of the hand. Yet, I pass by a few sad souls that appear so consumed in their “task” at hand that they cannot be bothered to participate in the neighborly gesticulation.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I seldom disturbed anyone when I used to work out in a gym and preferred not to be disturbed. However, the simple act described above is what living here is about. More than once I have been cycling in the middle of nowhere only to have a flat tire. I have never been passed by another cycling enthusiast that has not, in some way, offered to help or at least ask if I’m “all set.” Quite re-assuring to know so many people have your back when phone reception is spotty in so many areas on Martha’s Vineyard.

That same fraternal spirit seems to be lacking with certain walkers/joggers that would rather maintain their urban isolation while on island. Rather sad to witness, quite frankly, because those individuals inevitably cast a dour shadow on the rest of their wanderings when they traverse the island.
