What Do You Carry?
Summer months can be light and airy, or dark and heavy. A writing workshop may help you sort it all out.

There's an awesome summer writing workshop in Chilmark. From the warmth and love permeating through the circle of beginner and veteran writers, one could easily confuse the gathering for a healthy new form of spiritual therapy.
The first exercise in my writing workshop was to spend thirty minutes writing about the topic “What do you carry?”
When asked the question, “What do you carry?” I instantly thought of a psychological load; a heavy heart, a heavy head, the pain in my neck, and the commitments on my computer.
With the weight of the world almost on my shoulders, I happily thought of my little black bag.
It’s my favorite bag. It is the perfect size and shape. It is made of sturdy nylon and has a long strap, which allows for cross-shoulder comfort and security. It’s a vintage piece, lovingly worn and threadbare around the edges. It is definitely more functional than stylish, despite the Prada label.

It is a perfect bag to carry my other bags.
This environmentally conscience world has guilted me, and millions of other people into carrying an empty bag or two around at all times. These empty bags afford me the opportunity to carry hope. While looking at the empty bags, I hope to have a rewarding shopping experience. By using these bags, I hope that I’m being resourceful and, most importantly, I hope to show-off.
I have come to realize that there are two types of shoppers. One shopper is organized, with a scheduled marketing time, list of items, and the recycled bags readily available. The other shopper is random, harried and bag-less.
It gives me great joy to think that I could be among those admirable, conscience-type shoppers, saving the world from global warming one bag at a time. There's also something about that $.05 per bag savings at Cronig's that makes me feel very accomplished each shopping excursion.
So, in addition to the psychological load, my black Prada bag, my empty bags inside the Prada bag, I carry hope, joy and accomplishment.
Later in the week, as the workshop progressed, I was carrying a notebook filled with meaningful words, ideas and a much lighter psychological load.
