Creative License: Rebeccah J Handmade Leather Goods

The new Martha's Vineyard fashion statement is the leather wrap bracelet. The maker of the new island addiction is Rebecca J.  

From a small operation of selling a few bracelets here and there to a full blown business with serious demand, Rebeccah J has found her rhythm and we're all taking notice. 

We sat down with Rebeccah to get the story behind her work...

Tell us about your love for Martha's Vineyard?

It's an easy love really. Beautiful scenery and great outdoor activities especially all the cool places to walk dogs and the beach, of course. Small town coziness and close-knit community is ultimately the magnet, same as why everyone else gets stuck here. 

This island encourages entrepreneurs, DIY, pioneer ethos, etc. Everyone has six jobs and finds a way to afford to stay here, I love that. I'm self-taught so that works for me.

What drove your interest and enthusiasm for leather work?

My interest in leather goods stemmed from my background in sewing, and the idea that leather combines sewing with construction. The understanding that leather is both strong - and aestheticly pleasing. It's a synergy from the nostalga of sewing with my Mom and banging a hammer with my Dad.

The construction of durable goods and their innate ability to withstand the test of time. I also have a serious and longtime infatuation with anything vintage. The hope is that my bracelet, bag, and belts will be worn forever and passed down. 

What are you most proud of in the last year or so relating to your work?

I'm most proud of having the courage to take the proverbial leap of starting my own business and finally be able to eschew bartending. Well, not completely, I still dabble.

Have you always fancied yourself "creative?"

Always been creative? well, yeah, I’m a Pisces - it’s what we do!

What is the inspiration behind your (super successful) lines and collections and overall company?

I worked with my Dad in his home workshop - that example has always been an inspiration - just being able to make things with your own two hands   Everything I do I have figured out how to do on my own.  

What are your goals for your accessories/bag business?

Goals include: being able to be maintain my independence in terms of schedule, designs, management, etc. To keep on coming up with items that are appealing to a lot of people. To be able to continue to work on my craft full-time would be great!

Perfect day on the Vineyard?

Brunching with friends, heading up-island to the beach and walking the dogs. When it's warm...hanging on the beach with some sangria is a must.
