The story behind Two Women-Two Views in Annie Cummings’ own words: “In August 2010 my long-time friend and professional artist Nancy C. Marshall came to Martha’s Vineyard for a visit and to mentor me back into painting since I had time off from my usual postal deliveries to recover from hand surgery. We spent our time watching the Perseids meteor shower, sharing secrets and stories and of course we painted. So many viewers found the differences between our paintings interesting that we hoped one day to show them side by side. But the last day of her stay, Nancy complained of heartburn and soon after, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She is no longer here but it is with pride and gratitude that I present our works and a few more. You see, Nancy left me her easel and paints because she said, “I know you’ll use them.””

Annie Cummings was raised by two parents who loved to paint. At the age of four she would hide in the closet and draw horses on the cardboard boxes as if these would make her pony magically appear. She attended the University of Hartford where she studied ceramics but when she had the chance to move to the Vineyard and learn house construction, she jumped on it. For a paying job she delivers mail---going on thirty years now and she has also kept busy with dog-breeding, ceramics, sewing and drawing. When her friend Nancy came to visit in 2010 she nudged a brush back into Annie’s hand and Annie has been painting ever since.
