False Alarm: No Evidence of Sharks Found Near South Beach After Report

A report of five white sharks reportedly seen off South Beach Sunday could not be verified by Edgartown officials this week, according to the Martha's Vineyard Times

A student pilot reported to have seen the white sharks near the beach on Sunday evening, according to the Times.

Responding officers, however, found no evidence of the sharks, and subsequent monitoring of the area by land and air also resulted in no further sightings, according to the report.

It is not the first time sharks have been spotted in the area this summer. State biologists spotted a white shark off the coast of Cape Cod in early June. And Nauset Beach in Orleans closed shortly in late June after a dorsal fin was spotted off shore.
