Police and firefighters responded to Norton Point Beach Thursday to pull the man out of an 8-foot hole he dug himself into.

A Martha’s Vineyard beachgoer is lucky to be alive after a hole he dug himself into collapsed Thursday.

Police and firefighters rushed to Norton Point Beach Thursday afternoon and dug the man out. He was not injured.

Police said the man dug himself into an 8-foot hole, which collapsed. His friends were able to clear only enough sand to establish an airway. Firefighters used shovels and a backhoe to dig him out.

Police said the incident should serve as a reminder about the dangers of digging holes at beaches.

Last year, at least three people died in sand tunnel collapses in the U.S., according to CNN.

Authorities said having only a foot of sand above your head can suffocate you.
