The Martha's Vineyard Sharks were able to overcome 4 defensive errors to beat the Brockton Rox 10-5. Sharks starter Trevor Breton (WNEU) got the win on the night, while Rox starter Dylan Driscoll (Amherst) took the loss. With 2 early runs in the 2nd inning, the Sharks were off to a quick start. A Nick Sanford (UMASS) single scored Eric Brenk (Wofford), which was quickly followed by a run from Brett Holmgren (Endicott), who scored on an error from the Rox first-baseman. The Sharks kept up this fast start with 3 more runs in the 3rd. Ryan Siegel (Mercyhurst) on a Brenk single. A Justin Meier (Bucknell) sacrifice fly scored Donnie Cimino (Wesleyan), which was followed by another sac fly from Holmgren that scored Brenk from third.Â
The Rox were able to get on the board in the bottom of the third on an error by the Sharks catcher that scored Jack Curtis (Wake Forest). The Sharks were able to stem the flow there and get out of the inning still up 5-1. In the 7th inning, the bats exploded once again for the Sharks. RBIs from Brenk, Holmgren, and Sanford gave the Sharks a 7-1 lead. Both teams were able to push across more runs in the 8th and 9th, with the eventual final score in favor of Martha's Vineyard 10-5.Â
Sharks starter Breton picked up his 3rd win of the summer, while continuing to lead the Futures League with an outstanding 0.92 earned run average. Nick Sanford picked up 3 RBIs on the night, while Holmgren and Brenk added two apiece. The Sharks gained space at the top of the league with a 1.5 game lead on Nashua. Martha's Vineyard returns to action Thursday (7/18) against the Seacoast Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45pm.
