Tree Planting Banned In West Tisbury Cemeteries: Report

WEST TISBURY, MA— West Tisbury is changing up its tree-planting policy.

The town's Select Board has banned the planting of trees, shrubs, and bushes in town cemeteries, according to the Vineyard Gazette.

The vote came last week following a request from the cemetery superintendent at Lambert’s Cove Cemetery for a change in regulations.

“He’s explained that when plantings take place and they get bigger, they actually impede other grave spots,” town administrator Jennifer Rand told the Vineyard Gazette “Visually, he feels historically cemeteries tend to be quite open spaces.”

A formal policy will be forthcoming, according to the report.
