Vineyard's Playoff Dreams Dashed in Double Overtime

Despite best efforts, Cardinal Spellman shut down Martha's Vineyard 88 to 85 in the Division 3 semi final basketball playoff Tuesday night.

Martha's Vineyard's South Division 3 playoff dreams were dashed Tuesday night when the Vineyarders lost 88 to 85 in double overtime against Cardinal Spellman. The semi final game of the MIAA state basketball tournament was held at Sandwich High School.

The boys gained the momentum in the second half of the game, pulling up from behind to tie the score 71 to 71 by the end of the fourth period. The play was fast and fierce up and down the court between the two teams, and the energy was intense through the overtime periods, with the two teams answering each other shot for shot. Junior Peter Keaney dominated the court in a standout performance.

In the second round of overtime, the Vineyarders missed a few key shots that would have let them pull ahead and failed to secure the rebounds. Two fouls against Cardinal Spellman clinched the win for the Brockton team: They pulled ahead by three points with only a few seconds left on the clock.
