Working on Martha's Vineyard

Katie Brandt has dedicated the past 18 years of her life to volunteering with the American Legion in Edgartown.

Q. What is the specific program that you volunteer for?

A. I do work to support the Children's Comedy Magic Show. It's a program that the Legion has done every year for the past 18 years. All of the proceeds go to the All-Island Scholarship Fund. They provide two scholarships of $1,000 for graduating high school students.

Q. Why did you become involved in this type of service work?

A. My husband was a member of the Legion before he died. He was a Vietnam veteran and he served two tours. My son is a soldier and he has served three tours in Iraq and he's going to be going to Afgahanistan in January. So it's just my way of giving back.

Q. How long have you been living on Martha's Vineyard?

A. For about 23, 24 years now.

Q. What is your favorite part about living here?

A. Sea glass. I'm a sea glass-oholic. No, I just like the people. I like everything about it. what's not to like? It's the most beautiful place in the universe.

Q. What is your favorite part about volunteering for the American Legion?

A. The interaction with the people and giving back to the island. The kids on the island deserve every chance they can have. They need all the help they can get.

Q. If you could do anything, what is your dream job?

A. I would probably do something that would involve tracking and studying birds of prey. If I could do it all over again I would work for something like the Department of Evironmental Protection.
