Helmet Worn During Bicycle Crash Underscores Value of Medfield Police Department National Night Out Safety Initiative

Just days after the Medfield Police Department's National Night Out celebration, one of the young attendees who received a free bicycle helmet was involved in a motor vehicle versus bicycle crash. MPD Officer Mullaney and MPD Officer Burton responded to the scene. Thankfully, the 10-year-old rider was wearing the helmet provided at the event.

With the permission of the family, the Medfield Police Department is sharing this story to reinforce an important safety message: wearing a properly fitted helmet can make a critical difference. As part of the department's continued commitment to bicycle safety, the officers who responded to the incident recently presented the young rider with a new replacement helmet.

The timing of this incident is especially meaningful as Medfield students prepare to head back to school. In the coming weeks, more children and teenagers will be walking, riding bicycles, waiting at bus stops, and crossing roadways throughout the community. The Medfield Police Department reminds motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions, and remain especially alert during morning and afternoon school travel times. Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to make sure children wear a properly fitted helmet every time they ride.

This moment serves as a reminder that community policing extends beyond responding to emergencies to include education, prevention, and building relationships with the community.

Police Chief Michelle Guerette noted, "National Night Out is about relationships and safety. We're grateful this young man was wearing his helmet, and we're thankful he's doing well. As our students head back to school, we hope his experience reminds every child and every parent that a helmet should be worn on every ride."

The Medfield Police Department extends its thanks to the family for allowing their story to be shared in the hope that it may help protect others.
