Breanna Lungo-Koehn Is Medford's Next Mayor: Election Results

MEDFORD, MA — Medford elected a new mayor Tuesday, as longtime city councilor Breanna Lungo-Koehn unseated incumbent Stephanie Muccini Burke. The race came down to a difference of 652 votes, with Lungo-Koehn receiving 6,912 and Burke receiving 6,260.

All five incumbent city councilors — John Falco Jr., George Scarpelli, Adam Knight, Michael Marks and Richard Caraviello — were re-elected, while newcomers Zac Bears and Nicole Morell were sent to the City Council with 5,201 votes and 4,819 votes, respectively.

Four of five incumbent School Committee members — Kathleen Kreatz, Mea Quinn Mustone, Paul Ruseau and Paulette Van der Kloot — were re-elected. Jenny Graham and Melanie McLaughlin were also elected. Graham received 5,610 votes and Melanie McLaughlin received 5,039 votes.

Voters endured periods of heavy rain Tuesday. At Andrews Middle School, Rick O'Sullivan and Annette Lister braved the weather in support of Lungo-Koehn. O'Sullivan, who coached Lungo-Koehn in youth sports, said he believes the longtime city councilor would run Medford with more transparency. He cited current administration's handling of a gun magazine that was found at McGlynn Middle School in early 2018.

Lister said the most important issue for her was housing.

"We want our city back," she told Patch. "We don't want it to turn into Boston with its high rises."

In front of Roberts Elementary School, a drenched Dan Fowkes and Steven DeMeo held signs in support of Burke. DeMeo said he believes Burke has done a "good job."

"Look at where the city is going, where it has gone," Fowkes added. "To me she's a proven leader, and she has the ability to take us to the next level."
