MEDFORD, MA — Five people are in custody, and three police officers are injured after an intercity motor vehicle chase took place early Tuesday morning, according to the Medford Police Department.
The department, along with Malden police and State Troopers, responded to the scene on Barbara Lane at approximately 4:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a motor vehicle break-in in progress.
“An officer in the area observed a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the area of Lincoln Road,” Medford police said in a statement. “As the officer attempted to make contact with the vehicle, it drove at the officer, resulting in the officer discharging their firearm.”
Authorities pursued the vehicle as it crossed into neighboring Malden, where it eventually collided with a State Police cruiser. Upon impact, five juveniles exited the car and attempted to flee on foot. They were soon apprehended on James Street and Medford Street, respectively. Along with the three officers, one of the juveniles was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Medford police said no one was struck by the gunfire and the injuries are unrelated.
Malden police told Patch that they monitored the scene and assisted in securing the area as Medford and State Police made the arrests.
“There is no information to suggest any ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident,” Malden police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
