MEDFORD, MA — New bicycle racks will be installed throughout Medford this year as part of a city effort to make traveling by bike safer and more convenient while improving access to business districts across the community.
The city's transportation team worked with the Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission to identify locations for the new racks. According to city officials, the installations are intended to make bicycle travel throughout Medford's squares more accessible and navigable while helping reduce downtown traffic congestion.
The bike rack program builds on work the Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission has been developing for several years. In 2021, the commission identified dozens of priority locations for bicycle parking near businesses and commercial districts that lacked convenient bike racks. The recommendations were intended to improve access to local destinations while supporting the city's broader transportation planning efforts.
The first round of installations is scheduled to take place this summer and includes the following locations:
City officials said an additional 40 bike rack locations are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Those installations are planned for West Medford and South Medford and include the following locations:
West Medford
South Medford
According to the city, the selected locations were chosen to expand bike parking capacity while minimizing impacts on surrounding areas. Officials said the program will not eliminate any vehicle parking spaces, though residents may notice sidewalk markings indicating where the racks will be installed. The city also noted that installation locations remain subject to change.
The Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission, established in 2014, advises the city on bicycle infrastructure and safety improvements. In addition to recommending bike parking locations, the commission has worked with city officials on projects aimed at making bicycling a safer and more practical transportation option throughout Medford.
