Medford Square Manhole Fires Cause Road Closures

The downtown area was closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic as crews dealt with the blazes.

MEDFORD, MA — Multiple manhole fires prompted the evacuation of several businesses and temporarily shut down much of Medford Square Saturday evening, according to the Medford Police Department.

Medford Police, Medford Fire Department, National Grid and several partner agencies responded to the area after multiple manhole fires were reported in and around Medford Square. As a precaution, officials closed portions of the square to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, evacuated several nearby businesses and shut off power in the area so crews could safely investigate the incident and make repairs.

The affected area stretched from Forest Street to Lawrence Road and from Riverside Avenue to River Street. The closure was later expanded to include the Winthrop Street rotary as emergency crews continued working.

Medford Police Capt. Barry Clemente said the evacuations were precautionary because the incident remained active and ongoing. He urged residents to avoid Medford Square altogether while police diverted traffic from the area and National Grid crews worked alongside emergency responders.

"National Grid electric is on the scene, as well as an increased police presence," Clemente said in a citywide alert. "Everyone's cooperation is appreciated."

Most of the roadways in Medford Square reopened later Saturday night, but police said a portion of High Street will remain closed through Sunday while National Grid completes repairs. Officials also said the power outage remains in effect in parts of the square, leaving several traffic signals without electricity.

Police asked drivers to seek alternate routes and use extra caution if traveling through the area.

The cause of the manhole fires remains under investigation. No injuries had been reported as of Saturday night.
