Medford Riverside Plaza Renovation Complete

MEDFORD, MA — A renovation project at Riverside Plaza in Medford Square is officially complete, bringing new amenities and accessibility improvements to one of the city's central public gathering spaces.

Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced the completion on Wednesday, marking the end of a project that added shade structures, a low deck and a drinking fountain to the downtown plaza.

The improvements were first announced earlier this year as part of the city's more than $2.4 million investment in park renovations and public space upgrades throughout the city. Plans for Riverside Plaza included installing shade umbrellas and sails over the plaza patio, a water bottle filling station, and an accessible floating deck beneath the existing tree canopy. The project was funded through Community Preservation Act funding and a state Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities grant.

According to city bid documents, the work also included relocating an existing tree, modifying the plaza's irrigation system, and constructing a composite wood deck. The improvements were intended to create a more comfortable and accessible gathering space for residents and visitors in the heart of Medford Square.

The Riverside Plaza project was one of several park improvement initiatives undertaken by the city this year. Other projects included new nature play features at Logan Park, shade structures at Tufts Park, accessibility and climate resiliency upgrades at Carr Park, and pedestrian safety improvements at Playstead Park.

"Thank you to our contractor JJ Phelan, designer IMEG Corp., our team in the Office of Planning, Development and Sustainability, and our DPW for coordinating the project. And to the CPA and our state partners for supplying funding," Lungo-Koehn said in a statement.
