MEDFORD, MA — The city has designated three cooling centers this week as hot weather settles across Massachusetts, offering residents air-conditioned spaces to escape the heat.
The Medford Police Department Community Room, Medford Senior Center, and Medford Public Library are available as cooling centers, with the police department community room open around the clock. The city encouraged residents who need relief from the heat to take advantage of the facilities.
The National Weather Service has warned of dangerous heat across much of the state this week, with heat index values expected to exceed 100 degrees in some areas. The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Thursday before temperatures begin to ease heading into the holiday weekend.
The city also reminded residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the heat, and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Officials noted that older adults, young children and people with underlying medical conditions are at greater risk during periods of extreme heat.
Cooling centers will be open at the following times and locations:
Medford Police Department Community Room (100 Main St.)
Medford Senior Center (101 Riverside Ave.)
Medford Public Library (111 High St.)
