New Coffee Shop Opening On Tufts University Campus

The location will be open to the public as well as students.

MEDFORD,MA — A Boston-based coffee chain is preparing to open its first Medford location inside Tufts University's Joyce Cummings Center.

A sign for Pavement Coffeehouse is now displayed outside the building at 177 College Ave., replacing the former Starbucks storefront. The space has remained vacant since Starbucks closed last fall as part of the company's broader effort to shutter underperforming locations.

Pavement Coffeehouse currently operates multiple locations throughout the are with spots in Boston, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton, and Brookline. While an opening date has not been announced publicly, the new café will mark the company's first location in Medford.

The Joyce Cummings Center opened in 2021 as a multidisciplinary academic building adjacent to the MBTA's Medford/Tufts Green Line station. In addition to housing classrooms and research space, the building regularly hosts conferences, lectures, and other public events. The project was made possible through a major gift from the Cummings Foundation, which has donated nearly $150 million to Tufts University over the years.

The Cummings Foundation has also supported several organizations in Medford. According to the foundation, the Royall House and Slave Quarters has received nearly $550,000 in grants, while Medford Public Schools has received approximately $460,000.
