Brazilian Culture Taking Center Stage At Medford Celebration

The celebration has become a recurring event in Medford.

MEDFORD, MA — Brazilian culture will be on full display at City Hall on 85 George P. Hassett Drive this weekend as residents will gather for an afternoon of food, music, and activities celebrating the country's independence.

The Brazilian Independence Day Celebration is returning on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The free event, organized by the City of Medford's Office of Prevention & Outreach, is open to everyone and is intended to celebrate the culture, traditions, and contributions of the city's Brazilian community.

Live music and authentic Brazilian food will help create the atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Children's activities will also be available, while residents will have the opportunity to meet their neighbors and learn more about Brazilian culture.

"Events like this bring our community together, help us build new friendships, and remind us that our diversity is one of Medford's greatest strengths," organizers said in announcing the celebration.

The event has become a recurring celebration in Medford in recent years. A 2024 edition at City Hall similarly featured food, music, children's games and resources from local businesses and organizations. The city hosted another Brazilian Independence Day celebration in 2025, when Brazilian flags decorated City Hall and families gathered outside for activities.

Brazil officially celebrates its Independence Day on Monday, Sept. 7, commemorating the country's separation from Portugal in 1822. The date is associated with Prince Pedro's declaration of independence near São Paulo on Sept. 7 of that year, though the country's independence was a longer process and fighting continued in parts of Brazil into 1823.

Medford's celebration will take place several weeks before the national holiday and is intended for the entire community, regardless of Brazilian heritage.
